How to Convert an Afghan Date to an English (Gregorian) Date
Converting an Afghan Solar Hijri date to a Gregorian date depends on the Afghan year, month, and day. You can use the month table above for a general reference, or enter the date directly into the converter at the top of this page for the corresponding Gregorian date.
- Identify the Afghan year, month, and day. For example,
1403/01/01represents the first day of the first month of Afghan year 1403. - Identify the corresponding Gregorian date range. The Afghan Solar Hijri year begins around Nowruz in March, and the first six months generally fall within the same Gregorian year.
- Account for the specific month and day. The exact Gregorian date depends on the calendar's month lengths and leap-year rules, so adding a fixed number of years is not enough to convert a complete date.
- Use the converter to verify the exact date. Select Afghan Solar Hijri as the input calendar, enter the date, and click Convert Date.
Example: Afghan date 1403/01/01 (Hamal 1, 1403) corresponds to 20 March 2024 under the calendar conversion used by this tool. This date is Nowruz, the Afghan New Year.
Difference Between Afghan and Persian Solar Hijri Calendars
Afghanistan and Iran both use Solar Hijri (SH) calendar systems. The calendar calculation used by this converter is shared between the Afghan and Persian options, while the month names and labels differ between the two.
There are two main differences:
- Month names. Iran uses Persian names such as Farvardin, Ordibehesht, and Khordad. Afghanistan uses month names such as Hamal, Sawr, and Jawza, with Pashto and Dari names also provided.
- Transliteration. Afghan month names may appear with different English spellings in different sources. For example, Sawr may also be written as Saur, and Aqrab may have other transliteration variants.
For the conversion system used by this tool, the numeric Solar Hijri date is the same for the Afghan and Persian options; the main difference is the month naming and display. For example, Afghan 1403/01/15 and Persian 1403/01/15 both correspond to 4 April 2024 under the conversion algorithm used by this tool.
The start of the Solar Hijri year is around March 20 or 21, depending on the year and the calendar calculation.
Date of Birth Converter – Convert Birth Date to Afghan or English
Need to convert a date of birth from the Afghan calendar to the English (Gregorian) calendar — or the other way around? The converter handles birth dates using the same calendar conversion as other dates.
Common use cases:
- Converting an Afghan Tazkira (national ID) birth date to English for visa, passport, or immigration forms.
- Converting a birth certificate date between Afghan and Gregorian calendars.
- Finding your exact age in years, months, and days using the built-in Age Calculator tab.
- Determining an Afghan date of birth from a Gregorian date, or a Gregorian date from an Afghan date.
How: Enter the date of birth in either the Afghan or Gregorian calendar, click Convert Date, and the tool shows the corresponding date. To calculate your age, switch to the Calculate tab and select Age Calculator.
What Is Date Conversion?
Date conversion means translating a date from one calendar system or format to another. This tool supports 8 calendar systems — Gregorian, Islamic (Umm al-Qura), Afghan Solar Hijri, Persian Solar Hijri, Ethiopian, Indian National (Saka), Julian, and Buddhist Era — making it useful for converting dates across different calendars and formats.
Whether you need to convert an Afghan date to Gregorian, compare dates between calendar systems, or work with different date formats, the Date Converter provides the corresponding date and useful date information in one place.
Convert Between Other Calendar Systems
Besides the Afghan calendar, this tool also supports seven other calendar systems: Gregorian, Islamic (Umm al-Qura), Persian Solar Hijri, Ethiopian, Julian, Buddhist Era, and Indian National (Saka). Each calendar has its own month names, year numbering, and calculation rules. Select a calendar in the converter above to see the corresponding date.
Islamic (Umm al-Qura) Date Converter
The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar used to determine religious dates such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Hajj. It has 12 months, with months generally alternating between 29 and 30 days. This tool uses the Umm al-Qura calculation and displays Islamic month names in both English and Arabic.
The converter also identifies dates associated with Islamic observances, including Islamic New Year, Ashura, Mawlid al-Nabi, Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha.
Example: Islamic date 1 Muharram 1446 corresponds to 7 July 2024 in the Gregorian calendar.
Persian (Solar Hijri) Date Converter
The Persian Solar Hijri calendar — also called Shamsi or Jalali — is the calendar system used by the Persian option in this converter. It uses the same underlying Solar Hijri date calculation as the Afghan option, while the month names and display labels differ.
Persian month names include Farvardin, Ordibehesht, and Khordad, while the Afghan option uses names such as Hamal, Sawr, and Jawza.
Example: Persian date 1 Farvardin 1403 corresponds to 20 March 2024 under the conversion algorithm used by this tool.
Ethiopian Date Converter
The Ethiopian calendar, also known as the Ge'ez calendar, has 13 months: 12 months of 30 days followed by Pagume, a short 13th month of 5 or 6 days. This converter uses Ethiopian month names such as Meskerem, Tikimt, Hidar, and Pagume.
Example: Under the calculation implemented by this tool, Gregorian date 11 September 2024 corresponds to 1 Meskerem 2016.
Julian Date Converter
The Julian calendar was used historically in Europe and is still relevant for historical date conversion and some religious traditions. The current Julian conversion implementation uses a 13-day difference for dates from 1900 through 2099.
Example: Under the current conversion implementation, Gregorian date 25 December 2024 corresponds to 12 December 2024 in the Julian calendar.
Buddhist Era (BE) Date Converter
The Buddhist Era calendar uses the same month and day as the Gregorian calendar while numbering the year differently. In this converter, the Buddhist Era year is calculated as Gregorian year + 543.
Example: Buddhist Era year 2567 BE corresponds to Gregorian year 2024.
Indian National (Saka) Date Converter
The Indian National calendar, also known as the Saka calendar, is a solar calendar with 12 months. The Saka year begins with Chaitra, with the New Year falling on March 21 in Gregorian leap years and March 22 in other years.
Example: Indian National date 1 Chaitra 1946 corresponds to 21 March 2024 in the Gregorian calendar.
